Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is an advanced fertility treatment that is used in conjunction with in vitro fertilization (IVF). In this procedure, a single selected sperm is directly injected into a mature egg, increasing the chances of fertilization in cases of severe male infertility or when previous IVF attempts haven't been successful. At Reproductive Biology Associates, we proudly offer ICSI as part of our comprehensive fertility services, helping couples achieve their dream of parenthood.

How Does ICSI Differ From Conventional IVF?

Both conventional IVF and IVF with ICSI involve similar steps: hormone stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization, and embryo transfer. The key difference between the two methods is the way sperm meets the egg. In conventional IVF, multiple sperm are placed with the egg in the same container to facilitate fertilization. In contrast, ICSI involves an embryologist directly injecting a single sperm into the egg. The embryologist first analyzes the male partner's sperm sample to isolate the strongest sperm for insemination.

When Is ICSI Recommended?

ICSI is often recommended for individuals and couples facing severe male-factor infertility. This includes cases such as:

  • Low sperm concentration (the number of sperm cells found in each milliliter of semen)
  • Low sperm motility (the ability of sperm to swim effectively through the female reproductive tract to fertilize an egg)
  • Significantly abnormal sperm morphology (the shape and structure of sperm)

Additionally, ICSI is advised for patients who have experienced fertilization issues in previous IVF cycles or for couples with a low yield of eggs during retrieval. In such situations, ICSI may increase the percentage of fertilized eggs compared to conventional fertilization.

ICSI Pregnancy Success Rates

Thanks to ICSI, many couples have the opportunity to conceive and have healthy pregnancies that might not have been possible otherwise. By directly injecting a single sperm into an egg, ICSI significantly increases fertilization success rates, particularly for couples facing male infertility. When used in conjunction with IVF, ICSI improves the chances of achieving a successful pregnancy, especially in cases where traditional IVF methods have not been effective.
