You Are Not Alone: Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month
October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, a time to remember the babies who have been lost and to support the families who grieve them. If you're carrying this kind of loss, we want you to know that your grief is real and you don't have to go through this alone.
On October 15, families around the world take part in the Wave of Light by lighting a candle at 7 p.m. local time.
You Are Not Alone
Pregnancy loss is far more common than most people realize. Early pregnancy loss happens in about 1 in 10 confirmed pregnancies, according to the National Institutes of Health, and many more losses happen before a pregnancy is ever confirmed.
Most early losses are caused by chromosomal problems that no one could have prevented. A loss is not your fault. Even so, it can feel lonely, especially when friends and family don't know what to say.
Gentle Ways to Honor Your Loss
There is no right way to grieve, and no timeline you have to follow. If it feels right for you, you might:
- Light a candle on October 15 as part of the Wave of Light
- Write a letter to your baby or keep a journal
- Plant a tree or flowers, or create a small keepsake
- Talk with your partner, a friend or a counselor about how you're feeling
- Give yourself permission to rest, step back from social media or skip events that feel too hard
When To Talk To A Fertility Specialist
If you've had two or more pregnancy losses, you don't have to wait to look for answers. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) updated its guidance in June 2026, recommending an evaluation after two losses. The losses don't need to be back to back.
An evaluation may include testing to look for a cause and, just as important, emotional support. And there is real reason for hope: ASRM notes that 50 to 80 percent of patients with recurrent loss go on to have a successful pregnancy.
