A Journey of Faith, Science, and Miracles: Kelly’s Story with RBA
For Kelly Sharp, the road to building her family was anything but simple. Her story spans more than a decade, filled with heartbreak, resilience, and ultimately, joy. Today, Kelly shares her journey to inspire hope for others walking a similar path and to shine a light on the compassionate care she found at Reproductive Biology Associates (RBA).
The Beginning: Heartbreak and Hard Choices
“About 12 years ago, after multiple miscarriages, we determined that my husband had a balanced translocation causing the miscarriages,” Kelly recalls. At the time, the couple faced a difficult decision. IVF was an option, but Kelly said, “We didn’t feel the calling to pursue IVF.”
Instead, they chose adoption through the foster system, a decision that brought two beautiful children into their lives. “We adopted a brother and sister, who are now 13 and 14,” she shared proudly.
For years, Kelly believed her family was complete. About three years ago, something changed. “We started having the feeling that our family just wasn’t complete,” she said. That longing led her back to the idea of IVF and to RBA.
Finding RBA
Although Kelly lives in Middle Georgia, she connected with RBA in Atlanta. “In what I now call a God thing, we were placed under the amazing care of Dr. Toledo and his team,” she shares. From the start, Kelly felt reassured by the thorough, personalized approach. “Knowing our fertility struggles as well as my age at the time (38), Dr. Toledo was very comprehensive in his approach.”
The couple began IVF with preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) to address the translocation issue. It was a challenging process. “Due to the translocation, only one embryo out of many produced survived,” Kelly explains. That single embryo was frozen, giving the family time to prepare for the next step.
The Call That Changed Everything
One moment Kelly will never forget came on a quiet Sunday afternoon. “Dr. Toledo called me to tell me that unfortunately we only had one surviving embryo,” she said. He had been out of town earlier in the week when the initial news came, but he wanted to speak to her personally. “He assured me that we would throw the kitchen sink at this, and I truly feel he did.”
Those words and the care behind them gave Kelly hope when she needed it most.
The Mental Game and the Miracle
For Kelly, the hardest part wasn’t the medical process, it was the emotional one. “The mental game was the hardest part of the experience for me,” she admits. After five miscarriages, allowing herself to believe in a positive outcome was difficult. But with the support of RBA and her faith, Kelly pressed forward.
Her perseverance paid off. In February 2024, Kelly and her husband welcomed their daughter, Ada Charles, a true miracle. “I know the pure joy of giving birth and having a biological child,” Kelly said. “Everyone at RBA was a true blessing to us.”
Why Kelly Recommends RBA
Kelly’s experience with RBA was marked by compassion and flexibility. Living two hours away, virtual appointments made the process easier. “When I had to come to the Atlanta office, everyone was always accommodating and sensitive to the situation,” she notes.
Would she recommend RBA to others? “Yes!” she said. Her advice for anyone starting their fertility journey: “Ask all the questions!”
